Virtual Reality Technology - A step into the future

Virtual Reality (VR) technology has been gaining traction for decades now, from the unexpectedly named film ‘Lawnmower Man’ in the early 90s to a host of other popular culture stories, films and tv shows, the concept of VR has been painted as an all-encompassing immersive experience. Now however, the reality of virtual reality is upon us! Headsets with inbuilt headphones, motion sensors and even hand like controls all add to the overall experience within the virtual environment. Whilst I’m sure the games and entertainment industries will be gaining huge traction from these technologies, there is also huge potential for industry to adopt the technology. By allowing people to ‘access’ the digital asset in a safe environment, a host of engineering, construction, scenario modelling and many other uses can be undertaken.

Myself and Neil Brady, Scopus’ Managing Director, had the pleasure of being allowed to test the VR setup at Amec Foster Wheeler’s Aberdeen office. It is hard to describe just how immersive it is. I was ducking down as I ‘walked’ under pipes and it was not a pleasant experience when I ‘fell’ off a tower! Recognising the value of this technology, Scopus is looking forward to bringing VR into our Survey capabilities and offering it to the market. As the technology gradually gains traction it can only be a matter of time until the tech is seen in offices and industries all over the world. Just be sure to watch your step out there!
